July Grant Beneficiary Spotlight: Seniors Alliance of Platte Canyon

At PCCP Resale Boutique, every month gives us an opportunity to highlight one of the local organizations helping make our mountain community stronger, more connected, and more supported.

This July, we are proud to feature Seniors Alliance of Platte Canyon as our grant beneficiary partner.

Serving the Platte Canyon area of Park County, from Pine Junction to the top of Kenosha Pass, Seniors Alliance of Platte Canyon was created by local citizens who recognized a growing need: seniors in our rural mountain communities often face gaps between available government services, local resources, and the real-life support needed to age well close to home.

Their mission is centered around four key areas: advocacy, socialization, education, and resources. Together, these areas help seniors stay informed, connected, active, and supported.

Helping Seniors Stay Connected

One of the most meaningful parts of Seniors Alliance’s work is creating opportunities for social connection. In mountain communities, isolation can be a real concern, especially for older adults who may live alone, have limited mobility, or face transportation barriers.

Seniors Alliance helps address this through gatherings and activities that bring people together. Recent examples include ice cream socials, senior hikes, and outings at Staunton State Park. During one recent hike, participants were able to take advantage of trek chairs available at the park, helping make the outdoors more accessible for seniors who may not be as mobile.

Upcoming activities also include events such as stargazing at Staunton State Park’s amphitheater, giving local seniors another way to enjoy community, nature, and connection right here in the place we call home.

Education That Builds Confidence

Seniors Alliance also supports lifelong learning and practical education. One recent example brought together high school seniors and local older adults for a technology education program. Over four weeks, students helped seniors learn how to better use technology in everyday life.

The goal was practical and empowering: helping seniors gain the confidence to do things like take notes during medical appointments, communicate more easily, access information, and stay more connected.

Programs like this benefit everyone involved. Seniors gain helpful skills, students have the chance to serve and lead, and the broader community becomes more connected across generations.

Advocacy for Local Needs

Advocacy is another important part of the Seniors Alliance mission. The organization helps raise awareness about issues that affect older adults in Platte Canyon and works to connect seniors with information, support, and local solutions.

One recent example involved advocacy around a property tax deduction issue that impacted seniors. Making certain senior tax benefits more portable can make a meaningful difference for older adults who may need to move but do not want to lose an important financial benefit.

In a rural area where services can be limited and systems can be difficult to navigate, local advocacy matters. Seniors Alliance helps ensure that the voices and needs of older adults in Platte Canyon are part of the conversation.

Local Resources When They Are Needed Most

Seniors Alliance also helps connect people with tangible resources. One example is a lending closet that includes mobility and durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, crutches, and other items seniors may need for temporary or longer-term support.

Instead of requiring someone to purchase equipment they may only need for a season, the lending closet helps provide access when it is needed.

Seniors Alliance also maintains an online Resource Directoryfor seniors and their families. The directory includes local services, programs, and support options available in the Platte Canyon area. It is designed to help seniors stay connected, informed, and empowered.

How PCCP Support Helps

As July’s PCCP Resale Boutique grant beneficiary partner, Seniors Alliance of Platte Canyon is raising support for several important needs this year.

Funds received through the PCCP grant program may help support efforts such as reprinting the senior resource directory, maintaining and replacing equipment in the lending closet, and helping address urgent needs for local seniors when additional support is appropriate and available.

These are practical, local efforts that can make a direct difference for older adults and families in our community.

Community Supporting Community
